PPI #70: Leadership Starts at Home

Oct 26, 2020

SUMMARY

  • In this episode, I'll discuss the importance of being a good leader on the home front. I believe that the key to being a great leader is being a great spouse  and parent, because leadership starts at home.
  • When I coach entrepreneurs and leaders, they often ask, “How do I improve my leadership ability?” However, the question is always about the work front and not the home front. If you want to become a better leader, start at home.
  • The first thing you can do proactively is to ask yourself, "What is the one thing I could be doing for each member of my family that I know that they would appreciate?" You can even ask your family members this question if you want.
  • The second thing is to react better to the things that go on in your household. Take a moment to pause when things happen that trigger you or make you lose your cool. Ask yourself, “How would the best version of me respond in each of those situations?"
  • These two methods, proactive and reactive, will help you become a better leader at home. Being a leader is not about saying “Follow me.” It's about being a better role model and  and that starts at home with your spouse and children.

TRANSCRIPT

If you want to be a great leader, start by being a great spouse or parent, because leadership starts at home.

When I'm coaching entrepreneurs and leaders, they're often very focused on, "Well, how do I increase and improve my leadership ability?" They don't think about the home front, as well. They just think about that on the work front. I always say that if you want to become a better leader, focus on becoming a better spouse and parent or a better partner, because leadership starts at home. There's two simple things that you can do to grow your leadership on the home front.

Proactively, you can just simply ask yourself, "What is the one thing that I could be doing for each member of my family that I know that they would appreciate?" You can even ask them, "What is it that I can be doing for you? One thing if I did better, more often, more consistently, that you would love, that you would appreciate?"

Then number two, you could just react better to all the things that go on in your household. Think about the things that trigger you. Think about the things that maybe set you off or where you lose your cool and ask yourself, "How can I pause in those moments? How can I pause in those moments so I can ask myself what would the best version of me do? How would the best version of me respond in each of those situations?"

If you want to become a better leader, start by becoming a better spouse and parent. Leadership starts at home. Think about what's the one thing you can be doing proactively to be a better leader in your home and what's the one thing that you can do reactively to be a better leader in your home. How can you react better to the things going on. What I mean when I say a better leader in your home, I'm not necessarily saying that, "Okay, come on everyone, follow me. I'm the leader in this house, do what I say." That's not what I mean.

A leader is a role model. A leader is someone who has grown up, not because they've reached a certain age, but because they've stopped expecting people to do things that they don't role model themselves. That's what I mean by being a leader.
